What it is
Documents (app id documents) is Octoolo's word processor, for the jobs people use Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer or WordPad for: letters, résumés, reports and notes. It opens and saves Word files (.docx), opens plain text (.txt), Markdown (.md) and web pages (.html), and saves copies as PDF, plain text, Markdown and web pages.
The page on screen has the width of the paper (Letter or A4) with one-inch margins. One toolbar has text styles, fonts, sizes, bold and the rest, colors, alignment, lists, checklists and an Insert menu; typing / at the start of a line opens a menu of headings, lists, tables, pictures and more.
Everything happens on the PC: files are opened and saved where the person chooses, and nothing is uploaded. Documents works offline.
Opening it and what it costs
- On the home screen Documents is in the Documents group, next to the PDF Editor, Spreadsheets and Presentations. The home search finds it by words like "word", "docx", "writer", "letter", "resume" or "report".
- Addresses inside Octoolo:
#/app/documents. A shortcut can open it withOctoolo.exe --open=app/documents(this opens the app; it cannot open a particular file). - Documents needs Octoolo Cloud (the subscription) or its free trial. Prices, the trial and the free apps are in Prices and limits.
- Octoolo does not register itself with Windows for .docx files: double-clicking a Word file in File Explorer still opens Word (or whatever program Windows uses). To open a file in Documents, use Open a file in the app, pick it under Recent, or drag it onto Documents' start screen.
- The Help and feedback button (speech bubble) at the right of Documents' title bar opens Octoolo's Help and feedback page about Documents, where a message can be sent to Octoolo's support.
Tasks
Documents is one editor. In the catalog the whole app is the entry document-editor (Document editor): "Write letters, reports and résumés. Opens and saves Word files."
- Mail merge (
mail-merge): making one letter for every row of a spreadsheet is not available yet. Documents cannot do a mail merge in this version.
The start screen: new documents, templates, recent files and drafts
Documents opens on a start screen. Its title line says "Opens and saves Word document files (.docx, .txt, .md, .markdown, .html, .htm). Everything stays on this computer."
- Open a file (top right) shows Windows' Open dialog, filtered to Documents' file types.
- Continue where you left off appears when the last document had changes that were not saved (see "Drafts and recovery in Documents" below), with the file's name and how long ago it changed. Continue opens it with those changes; Discard throws the draft away.
- Start something new offers Blank document ("Start from nothing") and four templates:
- Letter ("A formal letter, laid out"): your address, today's date, the recipient's address, a bold subject line, the greeting, two short paragraphs and "Kind regards,".
- Résumé ("Experience, education, skills"): your name as a heading, a contact line, then Summary, Experience (two jobs with bulleted results), Education and Skills.
- Report ("Summary, findings, a table"): a title with "Prepared by" and today's date, Summary, Findings with a four-column table, and Next steps as a checklist.
- Meeting notes ("Agenda, notes, action items"): date and attendees, a numbered agenda, notes, and action items as a checklist. Templates are filled with example text to type over. When Octoolo runs in Spanish, Portuguese or German, the template text is in that language. A new document is called "Untitled.docx" (or the template's name, such as "Letter.docx") until it is saved.
- Recent lists the Word, text, Markdown and HTML files opened or saved in Documents (and such files opened or saved in Text Studio, which shares the list), newest first, with their folder and when they were last used. Click one to open it. A file that was moved or deleted shows "Moved or deleted" and cannot be clicked; the x at the end of a line ("Remove from the list") takes a file off the list (the file itself is not touched). With no recent files the screen says "Files you open or save here show up in this list. You can also drop a file anywhere on this page."
- Dropping a file anywhere on the start screen opens it (only the first file, when several are dropped). A dropped file is not added to Recent and has no place on disk yet, so Save asks where to save it.
How to open and edit a Word file
- Open Documents from the home screen.
- Press Open a file and choose the .docx, or click it under Recent, or drag it onto the start screen.
- If the file holds something Documents cannot keep (comments, headers and footers, text boxes...), a message at the bottom of the window names it for a few seconds, for example "Octoolo could not keep this document's comments and headers and footers." The rest opens normally.
- Click in the page and type. Use the toolbar, / at the start of a line, or Ctrl+/ to search for a command.
- Press Save (or Ctrl+S) to save over the file. If step 3 showed a message, Documents first asks "Replace the original <name>?", with the same sentence and "Saving over the file replaces the original with this version.": Replace the original overwrites it, Save as a new file asks for a new name and place and leaves the original as it was.
The title bar shows the file's name and its state: "Saved", "Unsaved changes", "Not saved yet" (a new document) or "Saving…".
How to write a new document or start from a template
- Open Documents.
- Under Start something new, click Blank document or a template (Letter, Résumé, Report, Meeting notes).
- Type. An empty paragraph shows "Write something, or type / for headings, lists, tables and more".
- Press Save (Ctrl+S). The first save shows Windows' Save dialog with the name "Untitled.docx" (or the template's name); choose a folder and a name. Later saves go to the same file without asking.
Formatting text and paragraphs in Documents
The toolbar, from left to right:
- Undo and Redo.
- Text style: Normal text, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Quote and Code (a monospaced block). There are three heading levels.
- Font: Calibri, Aptos, Arial, Cambria, Georgia, Segoe UI, Times New Roman, Verdana and Consolas. Choosing the document's own font (see "Page size and the document's font in Documents") takes a separate font off the selected text.
- Text size: Smaller text (minus), a box for the size in points (1 to 400), Bigger text (plus). The buttons step through 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 48, 60 and 72.
- Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough.
- Text color: a palette of 18 colors, Automatic (the normal color) and Other color… for any color.
- Highlight: six highlighter colors, No highlight and Other color….
- Link (Edit link when the cursor is in a link): see the next section.
- Align left, Center, Align right, Justify.
- Bulleted list, Numbered list, Checklist (a list with tick boxes). Press Tab in a list to indent an item and Shift+Tab to bring it back.
- Insert: a table, a picture, a link, a checklist, a quote, a code block, a divider and a page break (next section).
- Clear formatting: removes bold, colors, sizes, fonts, links and the like from the selection, and turns headings, quotes and lists back into normal text.
- Find and replace (magnifier, at the right end).
Headings are 20, 16 and 13 points, bold. The status bar at the bottom shows the number of words and characters (spaces included), the tip "Type / for headings, lists, tables and more", the page and font setting, and the zoom.
Inserting tables, pictures, links, checklists and page breaks in Documents
- Insert menu: under Table, move the pointer over the grid (up to 8 × 8) and click to insert a table of that size with a header row. Then Picture…, Link…, Checklist, Quote, Code, Divider (a line across the page) and Page break.
- The / menu: type / at the start of a line or after a space. It lists Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Bulleted list, Numbered list, Checklist, Table ("3 × 3, with a header row"), Picture, Quote, Code, Divider and Page break. Keep typing to filter it, use the arrow keys, and press Enter or Tab to insert; Esc closes it.
- Tables: with the cursor in a table, a second toolbar named Table appears: Add a row above, Add a row below, Add a column to the left, Add a column to the right, Delete row, Delete column, Merge or split cells (select several cells to merge them; in a merged cell it splits them), Header row (on or off) and Delete the table. Column edges can be dragged to change their width on screen; those widths are not saved in the .docx (Word shows the columns evenly across the page).
- Pictures: Picture… opens a file picker for PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG pictures. Pictures can also be pasted (Ctrl+V) or dragged from File Explorer onto the page. A picture is placed in the line of text, no wider than the text area; drag its corners to resize it (it keeps its proportions). Pictures cannot float or have text wrap around them.
- Links: select text and press Link (or Ctrl+K), paste or type a web address ("Paste or type a web address") and press Apply or Enter. An address without "https://" gets it added; an email address becomes a "mailto:" link. With nothing selected, the address itself is inserted as the link's text. To change a link put the cursor in it and press Edit link; Remove (or emptying the box and pressing Remove link) takes the link off. Clicking a link in the editor does not open it.
- Page breaks: Page break in the Insert or / menu, or Ctrl+Enter. On screen a dashed line labelled "Page break" marks it; in a PDF and in Word the text after it starts a new page.
Find and replace, word count and zoom in Documents
- Find: Ctrl+F or the magnifier at the right of the toolbar opens a box at the top ("Find in the document"). Every match is highlighted; the box shows "1 of 5" (or "None"). Enter or the Next arrow goes to the next match, Shift+Enter or the Previous arrow to the previous one, Esc or the x closes the box. Text selected before opening it is searched for at once. Matching ignores upper and lower case; there are no match-case, whole-word or regular expression options.
- Replace: Ctrl+H, or the Replace button in the find box, adds "Replace with". Replace changes the current match, Replace all changes every match and says, for example, "Replaced 3 times."
- Word count: the status bar always shows words and characters for the whole document.
- Zoom: the minus and plus at the bottom right zoom from 50% to 200% in steps of 10%; click the percentage to go back to 100%. Zoom only changes the view, not the document.
- Spell check is turned on for the page, so WebView2 (the browser engine inside Octoolo) underlines misspelled words as you type. A grammar check is in Text Studio, not in Documents.
Page size and the document's font in Documents
The button in the status bar that reads, for example, "Letter · Calibri 11" opens Page and text:
- Page size: Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 (8.27 × 11.69 in). A new document starts on Letter when Windows' display language is US English, Canadian English, US Spanish or Mexican Spanish, and on A4 everywhere else.
- The document's font: Calibri, Aptos, Arial, Cambria, Georgia, Segoe UI or Times New Roman. This is the font of all text that has no font of its own. New documents use Calibri.
- Its size: 10, 11, 12 or 14 pt. New documents use 11 pt.
The margins are always one inch on every side. Pages are always portrait. The command search also has Page size: Letter and Page size: A4.
Saving in Documents: Save, Save as and copies in other formats
- Save (button in the title bar, or Ctrl+S) saves the Word document. A document that came from a .docx file is saved over that file. A new document, a template, a file dropped onto the start screen and a file of another type (.txt, .md, .html) are saved as a new .docx file: Windows' Save dialog asks where.
- The arrow next to Save ("More ways to save") has:
- Save as Word document… (Ctrl+Shift+S): a new .docx under a name and in a folder you choose. The open document then continues in the new file.
- Save as PDF… (Ctrl+P): see "Save as PDF and printing in Documents".
- Save a copy as plain text (.txt)…, Save a copy as Markdown (.md)…, Save a copy as web page (.html)…: a copy in that format. The open document stays the Word document it was.
- Show in folder: opens File Explorer with the file selected (only once the document has a file).
- After a save a message says "Saved <name>" or "Saved a copy as <name>".
- A save is written to a temporary file next to the original first and then put in its place, so a failed save never leaves half a file.
- Open in the title bar (Ctrl+O) opens another file; the back arrow at the far left ("Back to the start") closes the document and goes back to the start screen. Both ask "Save your changes to <name>?" when there are unsaved changes ("Your changes are lost if you don't save them."), with Cancel, Don't save and Save.
Save as PDF and printing in Documents
Save as PDF… (in the arrow next to Save, or Ctrl+P) makes a PDF of the document and shows Windows' Save dialog for its name and folder ("Saved a copy as <name>.pdf"). There is no printer dialog and nothing to set up:
- The paper is the document's page size (Letter or A4), portrait, with one-inch margins.
- Text flows onto as many pages as it needs; page breaks start new pages.
- Colors, highlights and pictures are printed. Nothing is added: no page numbers, no header or footer, no date.
- A long document with many pictures can take a few seconds. After five minutes Octoolo gives up with "The page took too long to print."
Octoolo makes the PDF itself with WebView2's built-in PDF printer, so it works without "Microsoft Print to PDF" or any printer installed.
Documents has no Print button that sends to a paper printer. To print on paper, save a PDF and print it from a PDF reader (for example Microsoft Edge). To convert many Word files to PDF at once, use Converters (Converters).
Files Documents opens and saves
| Format | Opens | Saves | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Word document (.docx) | Yes | Yes (main format) | Word 2007 and later. |
| Plain text (.txt) | Yes | As a copy | Read as UTF-8. One paragraph per line when opened. |
| Markdown (.md, .markdown) | Yes | As a copy (.md) | Common Markdown: headings, lists, checklists, tables, quotes, code, links. |
| Web page (.html, .htm) | Yes | As a copy (.html) | Scripts and the page's styles are dropped when opened. |
| PDF (.pdf) | No | Yes (Save as PDF…) | To edit a PDF use the PDF Editor; to turn a PDF into Word use Converters. |
| Old Word (.doc) | No | No | "Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word first." |
| .rtf, .odt, .dotx, .docm, .pages | No | No | Not supported. The Open dialog does not show them; dropped on the start screen they open as unreadable text. |
A .txt, .md or .html file opens as a new Word document with the same name and .docx at the end (for example README.md becomes README.docx); the original file is only read, never changed.
Octoolo sets no size limit; very long documents with many large pictures get slower.
What Documents keeps and what it loses when it opens a Word file
When Documents opens a .docx it keeps:
- Paragraphs and their alignment (left, center, right, justified).
- Headings: Word's Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles; Heading 4 to 9 become Heading 3; the Title style becomes Heading 1 and the Subtitle style Heading 2. Paragraphs in a style whose name contains "Quote" become quotes.
- Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough (single and double), text color, size, font and highlighting (Word's highlight colors and character shading).
- Links to web pages and email addresses (links to places inside the document lose their link but keep their text).
- Bulleted and numbered lists, nested up to 9 levels.
- Checklists saved by Documents (lines starting with ☐ or ☑).
- Tables, including cells merged across and down, and header rows.
- Pictures in PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP and SVG, with their width and their alternative text.
- Page breaks and line breaks, tabs and symbols.
- The page size, as Letter or A4 (whichever width is closer), and the document's default font and size.
- Tracked changes are accepted: inserted text stays, deleted text goes.
These have no place in Documents. When a file has them, the opening message names them ("Octoolo could not keep this document's ..."), and saving over the original asks first. The words the message uses are in quotation marks:
- "headers and footers"
- "comments"
- "footnotes" (footnotes and endnotes)
- "text boxes"
- "charts and shapes" (charts, drawings, SmartArt)
- "equations"
- "embedded objects"
- "columns"
- "section breaks"
- "pictures in older formats (EMF, WMF)" (and other picture formats a web page cannot show)
- "tracked changes (they are accepted)"
Text boxes and shapes made in recent versions of Word are often stored in a way Documents skips without naming them: they are left out, and the message may not mention them. Check the document before saving over a Word file that has text boxes or shapes.
These are changed without a message:
- Margins become one inch on every side; landscape pages and other paper sizes become Letter or A4 portrait.
- Line spacing, spacing before and after paragraphs, indents and tab stops are not kept.
- Word styles other than the headings, Title, Subtitle and quotes become normal text, and the style names are not kept. Formatting set on the text itself (bold, a color, a font) stays; formatting that came only from a style is lost (the Strong and Emphasis styles become bold and italic).
- Superscript, subscript, small capitals and other effects are not kept.
- Table column widths, cell colors and table borders are not kept (tables get a plain thin border).
- The numbering style of lists (1., a., i., starting numbers) is not kept: numbered lists count 1, 2, 3 at the first level.
- Bookmarks and the links of a table of contents are not kept (a table of contents keeps its text).
Password-protected (encrypted) .docx files cannot be opened: Documents says "This is not a Word document (.docx). Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word first." Remove the password in Word first.
What Word sees in a .docx saved by Documents
A .docx saved by Documents is a standard Word file for Microsoft Word and other programs that open .docx. It has:
- The page size chosen (Letter or A4), portrait, one-inch margins.
- The document's font and size as Word's default, headings as Word's Heading 1, 2 and 3 styles (bold, 20, 16 and 13 pt), paragraphs with 8 pt after them and 1.15 line spacing.
- Every text format: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, color, size, font, highlight (written as character shading), and links (blue and underlined unless they have a color).
- Bulleted lists (•, ◦, ▪ by level) and numbered lists (1., a., i. by level); each numbered list starts at 1.
- Checklists as paragraphs starting with ☐ (not ticked) or ☑ (ticked): Word has no checklists of its own. Documents turns them back into checklists when it opens the file again.
- Quotes as indented italic grey paragraphs with a bar on the left; code blocks as paragraphs in Consolas 10 pt on a light background; dividers as a line under an empty paragraph. When such a file is opened in Documents again, quotes come back as italic grey paragraphs, code as Consolas paragraphs and dividers as empty lines: they are not quotes, code blocks or dividers any more.
- Tables across the full text width with thin grey borders, header rows shaded light grey, merged cells kept.
- Pictures at the size they are shown, made smaller if wider than the text; WebP and SVG pictures are saved as PNG.
- Page breaks.
Plain text, Markdown and web pages in Documents
Opening:
- .txt: every line becomes a paragraph. The file is read as UTF-8; a file in an older Windows (ANSI) encoding shows wrong characters for accented letters.
- .md / .markdown: # to ### become Heading 1 to 3 (four or more # become Heading 3); -, * and + items and 1. or 1) items become bulleted and numbered lists, nested by indenting; - [ ] and - [x] become checklist items; pipe tables with a separator line become tables with a header row; > lines become quotes; fenced code blocks (
```) become code blocks; a line of ---, *** or ___ becomes a divider;**bold**,*italic*and_italic_,~~strikethrough~~,`code`and[links](...)are kept. Lines next to each other join into one paragraph. Underlined headings (=== or --- under a line), HTML inside the Markdown, footnotes and reference-style links come in as plain text; front matter (settings between --- lines at the top) comes in as dividers and text. - .html / .htm: the page's body is read without its scripts, styles, frames and embedded objects; headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and links are kept, with bold, italics and the like.
- Pictures in Markdown and web pages that point to separate files or web addresses do not show and are not saved in the .docx; only pictures stored inside an .html file itself come through. Add pictures again with Picture….
Saving a copy:
- plain text (.txt): paragraphs separated by a blank line, bullets as "•", numbered items as "1.", checklist items as "[ ]" and "[x]", quotes with "> ", table rows with tabs between cells, dividers as "---". All formatting and pictures are left out.
- Markdown (.md): headings with #, lists with - and 1., checklists with - [ ] and - [x], tables as pipe tables (first row as the header), quotes with >, code in ``` fences, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code and links. Page breaks and dividers become ---. Underline, colors, highlights, fonts, sizes and alignment are left out. Pictures stored in the document are not exported: each becomes
, a placeholder showing where it was. - web page (.html): a page any browser opens, with the document's font and size, tables, quotes, code, checklists and the pictures inside the file itself.
The command search in Documents
What do you want to do? in the middle of the title bar (or Ctrl+/, Alt+Q or F1) opens a search of every command: type a few letters ("table", "bold", "save as pdf"), move with the arrow keys and press Enter. It shows each command's group and shortcut. "Nothing found. Try another word." means no command matches. Esc closes it.
Where Documents keeps things
- Your documents: only where you save them. Documents never copies them elsewhere.
- Recent files: one list shared by Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations and Octoolo's other editors that have one (the Photo Editor, the Vector Editor, Text Studio), in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.octoolo.app\recent-files.json. It holds the last 30 files opened or saved in any of them, PDFs saved with Save as PDF… included (each app shows only its own file types), so busy use of the other apps can push older documents off the list. It stores paths and names, not the files. - Drafts: the unsaved state of the open document, in the storage of Octoolo's window (WebView2), in the
EBWebViewfolder of%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.octoolo.app. Documents keeps one draft at a time. Pictures in the document are part of the draft. - PDFs being made: a few seconds in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.octoolo.app\print, then deleted (and anything left there is deleted when Octoolo starts). - While saving: a hidden temporary file named
.<file name>.octoolo-savingnext to the file, renamed over the file when the save is complete. - Uninstalling Octoolo keeps the recent list and drafts unless "Delete the application data" is ticked in the uninstaller. Your saved documents are never touched.
Drafts and recovery in Documents
Documents has no autosave to the file itself: the .docx changes only when you press Save. But two seconds after a change it keeps a draft of the open document on the PC. If Octoolo closes, crashes, the PC restarts or you go to another part of Octoolo without saving, the next time Documents opens its start screen shows Continue where you left off with the file's name, when it changed and "not saved". Continue opens the document with the changes (the title bar says "Unsaved changes"); then press Save. Discard throws the draft away.
- The draft is deleted when you save, when you choose Don't save, and when you leave a document that has no unsaved changes.
- Only one draft is kept: changing another document replaces it. Opening or starting another document instead of pressing Continue, and going back to the start screen without changing it, also deletes the earlier draft. Press Continue and save first.
- Changes made in the last two seconds before a crash may be missing.
- Leaving Documents other than with its back arrow (for example going to Settings with Ctrl+,, the home screen or Help and feedback) does not ask "Save your changes?", but the draft is kept.
- A document continued from a draft is saved over its file without the "Replace the original" question, even when the file lost parts (such as headers and footers) when it was first opened. Use Save as Word document… to keep the original whole.
- There is no version history and no way to get back an earlier saved version of a file.
Downloads it needs
None. Documents is part of the app and needs no extra download.
Privacy
Documents works on the PC. The documents, their names and their text never leave the computer. If "Send anonymous usage statistics" is on in Settings, Octoolo notes that Documents was opened, for how long, that a file was saved, and error messages with file names and paths taken out, never the file or its contents. See Privacy and data.
Troubleshooting
"Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word first."
Documents opens .docx, not the old .doc format (Word 97-2003). Open the file in Word and use File > Save As > Word Document (.docx), or ask the sender for a .docx. The same message also appears in "This is not a Word document (.docx). Older .doc files need to be saved as .docx in Word first.", which means the file is not a real .docx: an old .doc renamed to .docx, a password-protected (encrypted) Word file, or a damaged file. Remove the password in Word, or save it again as .docx.
"This Word document has no text in it that Octoolo can read."
The file is a ZIP package but not a Word document inside (for example another program's file renamed to .docx), or it is damaged. Open it in the program that made it and save it as a Word document again.
"Octoolo could not keep this document's ..." when a Word file opens
The document has parts Documents has no place for (the message lists them: comments, headers and footers, footnotes, text boxes, charts and shapes, equations, embedded objects, columns, section breaks, pictures in older formats, tracked changes). The rest is open and can be edited. When you save, Documents asks "Replace the original <name>?": choose Save as a new file to keep the original whole for Word users, or Replace the original if you no longer need those parts.
Saving fails: "is open in another program" or "is read-only"
- "<name> is open in another program. Close it there, or use Save as." The file is open in Word (or another program) that locks it. Close it there and save again, or use Save as Word document… to save under another name.
- "<name> is read-only. Turn that off in its Properties, or use Save as." In File Explorer, right-click the file > Properties, untick Read-only, or save under another name.
- "Could not save <path>: ..." Windows refused the save (no permission for the folder, the disk is full, a network drive went away). Use Save as Word document… to save somewhere else, such as Documents or the Desktop.
- "Use Save as to choose where to save." Octoolo may only save over files chosen in its own dialogs; use Save as Word document….
A recent file does not open: "That file is no longer there: it was moved or deleted."
The file was moved, renamed or deleted since it was last used, so it is taken off Recent. Open it from its new place with Open a file. "Open that file with the Open button first." means the same: open it once with Open a file.
I closed Octoolo without saving
Open Documents again: the start screen shows Continue where you left off. Press Continue, then Save. If there is no such line, the draft was saved, discarded, or replaced by a later document's draft, and the changes cannot be recovered.
The PDF did not come out: "The page took too long to print." or "The PDF could not be made"
Octoolo stopped after five minutes, or WebView2 (the browser engine inside Octoolo) could not print the page. Try again; for a very long document, split it or make big pictures smaller. If "The PDF could not be made" or "WebView2 could not print the page" keeps appearing, restart Octoolo and try once more, then contact support with the exact message.
The layout looks different from Word
Documents keeps text, styles, lists, tables and pictures but not every layout setting: margins are always one inch, line spacing and indents are not kept, and pictures sit in the text line. The opening message lists what was dropped. For documents with complex layouts, keep editing them in Word and use Documents for reading and simple edits.
Ctrl+Shift+X does not strike through text
In 0.8.0 the tooltip shows Ctrl+Shift+X, but the key is not connected. Select the text and press the Strikethrough button in the toolbar (or use the command search: Ctrl+/, type "strike").
A picture does not go in
Nothing happens when the picture is chosen, pasted or dropped: the file is not a picture the app can show, or it is damaged. Documents takes PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG. Save other pictures (such as HEIC or TIFF) as PNG or JPEG in another program first, then insert them.
Text got a line through it after Ctrl+Shift+S
In 0.8.0 Ctrl+Shift+S does two things: it opens Save as, and it turns strikethrough on or off for the selected text (or for what is typed next), so the saved copy can have that line too.
